Myth vs reality – a thread towards reality

There are some Myths and Facts about Coronavirus(COVID-19) which is spreading among people at a very fast pace. 

Myths are spreading faster than the infection itself. At this point, one must get alarmed and information should be consumed from authorized sources only. The sources which can be trusted upon and are well known among the people and are – Healthcare providers, Medical Institutes, Government portals etc. Always keep in mind, before following the instructions given by any individual you should first verify that, whether it is correct or not because one wrong information can be deadly for someone’s life.

Myth 1 – coronavirus can be treated and prevented from Antibiotics.

Fact – Antibiotics cannot treat viral infection. They can be used to kill or inhibit the growth of bacterias. The Coronavirus strain – 2019-nCoV belongs to a large family of viruses and, therefore antibiotics cannot be a preventive/ treatment measure. 

Myth 2 – Coronavirus affects only older people.

Fact – People of all age groups are exposed to coronavirus infection and anyone can be infected. However, people suffering from diseases such as asthma, diabetes, or any heart disease, or with low immunity or older people are more vulnerable to this viral infection.

Myth 3 – Rinsing of nose regularly with saline can prevent the spread of coronavirus infection.

Fact – Regularly rinsing the nose with water, saline or any chemical can not prevent coronavirus infection. It may help in providing quick relief from the common cold and other respiratory infections only.

Myth 4 – Putting on sesame oil on skin kills coronavirus or prevents those viruses from entering the body?

Fact – Sesame oil can not kill or prevent coronavirus. Few chemicals that do kill COVID-19 on surfaces include bleach/chlorine-based disinfectants, ether solvents, 75% ethanol, peracetic acid, and chloroform but sesame oil do not play any role in preventing the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

Myth 5 – Eating garlic help in preventing the infection of COVID-19.

Fact – Garlic is healthy and is loaded with antimicrobial properties but, it has no such antiviral effects which can cure coronavirus infection. Taking a vaccine is one of the preventive measures which could be taken.

Myth 6 – Applying cow dung or consuming cow urine can cure or prevent coronavirus infection.

Fact –NO, completely not. There is no scientific evidence that shows that cow dung or cow urine can cure COVID-19. Please do not believe in RUMORS they just spread and if you follow that it could be FATAL too.

Myth 7: You can protect yourself from COVID-19 by swallowing or gargling with bleach, taking acetic acid or steroids, or using essential oils, saltwater, ethanol or other substances.

Fact  None of these recommendations can protect you from COVID-19, and some of these may be dangerous also. Some of the ways to protect yourself from this coronavirus are:

– Washing your hands frequently.

– Avoiding close contact with people.

And many more precautions can be taken to stop the spread of this virus.

Myth 8: A face mask will protect you from COVID-19 and it will cure the patients having COVID-19.

Fact: Certain models of professional, tight-fitting respirators (such as the N95) protects health care workers as they care for infected patients. Masks work as a protective shield for stopping the spread of the virus but this does not mean that it’s the cure of disease.

Myth 9:Everyone with COVID-19 dies!!

Fact: Making this a general statement is very wrong. As it has been mentioned earlier also, COVID-19 is only fatal for a small percentage of people. The WHO also reports that around 80% of people will experience a relatively mild form of the disease, which will not require special treatment in a hospital. Mild symptoms may include fever, cough, sore throat, tiredness, and shortness of breath.
